An engineer on the team who builds an agentic software development workflow around a mature legacy codebase, so routine maintenance runs almost entirely through automation while we build its next-generation replacement.
About the Team
A technology, innovation, and consumer intelligence firm that advises global leaders on emerging science, technology, and market trends to drive smarter, more confident innovation decisions. It combines proprietary research, primary data from startups and industry experts, and advanced analytical frameworks to help organizations identify high-value opportunities, mitigate risk, and accelerate growth. By integrating human expertise with AI-enabled tools, it delivers objective, evidence-based insights that translate complex technological and consumer signals into actionable strategies for R&D, corporate innovation, and executive decision-making. It serves many of the world’s largest technology and consumer goods companies.
Summary
This is a focused, hands-on role for an engineer who will build an agentic software development workflow around one of our mature legacy codebases, so that routine maintenance runs almost entirely through automation. We are keeping this system healthy and low-touch while we build its next-generation replacement, and we want to do that with AI agents rather than a standing engineering team.
Your job is to make the codebase safe to change automatically and then build the pipeline that does it: an incoming issue becomes an agent-generated pull request, moves through automated review and checks, gets a quick human approval, and ships through an automated deploy. When you are done, people who are not engineers should be able to file an issue and get a PR to approve, with little or no dedicated engineer in the loop.
Responsibilities
- Assess the codebase and establish the baseline it needs to be changed safely by agents: a reliable build, characterization and regression tests around the areas that change most, and automated checks that catch breakage.
- Right-size this deliberately. The goal is enough of a safety net to automate maintenance, not a ground-up refactor of a system we will eventually replace.
- Design and implement an agent-driven workflow that turns an incoming issue into a reviewed, deployable pull request with minimal human effort: issue intake, agent-generated changes, automated review and checks, human approval, and automated deploy.
- Stand up the quality gates the agents depend on: automated tests, static analysis, CI/CD pipelines, and the guardrails that keep automated changes safe and reversible.
- Make issue submission self-service, so the broader team can file an issue and get a PR to approve without a dedicated engineer in the loop.
- Document the system and the operating model so routine maintenance runs with little or no dedicated engineering.
- Hand off cleanly, with the option to stay on in a low-hours capacity to keep improving the automation and shepherd the harder cases.
- Work closely with the CTO and the engineering team, who review and approve what the system produces.
- Communicate clearly and proactively, and keep the state of the automation visible.
Experience & Qualifications
- Deep, hands-on experience with AI coding agents used to build automation, not just to assist your own coding. You have built or operated agent-driven workflows (for example issue-to-PR, automated code review, or agents wired into CI/CD) or can clearly show you can.
- Fluency with the tooling around an agentic SDLC: coding agents, orchestration, evaluation and guardrails, and integrating agents with source control and deployment.
- Strong track record maintaining and modernizing large, mature codebases, and genuine comfort working in code that does not follow current best practices.
- Solid .NET / C# depth (the core of this system is ASP.NET / C#), with working comfort across a polyglot estate (JavaScript/TypeScript, Python). Umbraco or legacy ASP.NET experience is a plus.
- Hands-on experience getting legacy code under test (characterization and regression testing) and standing up CI/CD where little exists.
- Familiarity with Azure and Azure DevOps is a plus (this system runs there).
- Pragmatic and outcome-focused: you right-size the work, knowing the goal is low-touch maintenance of a system on a path to replacement, not perfection.
- Autonomous: you can scope and drive this build with limited oversight.
- A clear communicator, able to work full-time for the build with reasonable daily overlap with US Pacific hours.
Qualities of the Successful Candidate
- You are pragmatic and outcome-focused: you right-size your solutions and resist over-engineering, especially on a system with a limited remaining life.
- You are energized by building something that runs without you, and you measure your success by how little human effort it needs.
- You take ownership and create order in a messy, ambiguous environment.
- You treat AI agents as a way to multiply what a team can do, not just a personal convenience.
- You want to throw yourself into turning a sprawling legacy system into a quiet, automated, low-maintenance one.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Broad knowledge of software engineering across languages, frameworks, CI/CD, and current trends in AI-assisted development.
