Principal MySQL DBRE

About the Role

This is not a “whiteboard-only” architect role. We are looking for a senior MySQL infrastructure professional who has grown into architecture. The ideal candidate comes from one of these backgrounds:

Senior / Lead / Principal MySQL DBA – you know MySQL inside out and have led complex, high-stakes production environments.

Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) / Data Platform Engineer – you’ve built and operated resilient, observable data platforms at scale.

Infrastructure / Platform Architect with data specialization – you’ve architected hybrid cloud + on-prem systems with a deep focus on data layers.

If you are a hands-on engineer who now thinks in terms of systems, strategy, and compliance – while still being able to dig into query plans and replication lag – this role is for you.

Who we are looking for. A Senior / Lead / Principal MySQL DBA or Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) who has grown into architecture. This is not a whiteboard-only role: you will dig into query plans and replication lag yourself, while also owning strategy, reliability and compliance.

Working conditions:

• Format: remote.
• Time zone: you work on New York time (Eastern Time, UTC−5 / UTC−4 in summer).
• Working hours: evenings in your local time (for Eastern Europe).
• Engagement: contractor agreement (self-employed, sole proprietor, or individual).
• Schedule: full-time, Monday to Friday, 8 hours a day. Flexible schedule, no overtime.

What you will do:

• Define the data platform roadmap, balancing on-prem legacy with cloud-native AWS solutions.
• Design HA/DR architectures: replication, failover, cross-region redundancy.
• Lead major migrations, upgrades and platform consolidations.
• Implement backup and restore strategies and define SLOs and SLIs as a DBRE.
• Enforce least-privilege access, PII protection and SOC 2 controls.
• Automate provisioning (Terraform, CloudFormation) and database change management through CI/CD.
• Mentor teams and translate business and compliance needs into scalable data solutions.

Required:

• 7+ years in DBA, DBRE, data engineering or infrastructure roles, including 2+ years in a lead or architect capacity.
• Deep, hands-on MySQL expertise: Performance Schema, InnoDB internals, replication management.
• Experience in hybrid cloud and on-prem Linux environments, and in an environment with SOC requirements.
• SQL, Python, Bash or PowerShell.
• AWS: RDS, Aurora, S3, EC2, VPC, IAM, DMS, Glue.
• Terraform or CloudFormation. CI/CD for database changes with audit trails.
• Data warehousing: Snowflake, Redshift or BigQuery.
• Observability: Datadog, Prometheus, CloudWatch.
• Strong communication: you can present to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have: PostgreSQL, SQL Server or NoSQL experience; modeling tools (ER/Studio, dbdiagram, Lucid); AWS Certified Database – Specialty or AWS Certified Solutions Architect.

Who this is not for. This is not a role for a data engineer without MySQL administration experience, or a developer who has "worked with a database". We need hands-on experience running MySQL in production.
